Key West, which is also referred to as Cayo Hueso is the southernmost city in the USA on the North American continent. The city lies at the southernmost end of U.S. Route 1, the longest north-south road in the United States (and a bucket list must drive).

Key West is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. So you can walk to see the Atlantic Ocean and then go to the Gulf of Mexico in an hour’s time (unless you get distracted by all the other tourist spots).

 

Duval Street is the main street in Key West, Florida. Just a smidge over 1 mile long, covering 14 blocks of shopping, restaurants, and of course, bars. 

 

Key West officially covers all of the main city island, bone island, and several nearby islands: Sigsbee Park, Fleming Key, Sunset Key, Key Haven, Rockland Key, and the northern part of Stock Island. A little side note about “Bone Island” even thought it’s still considered “local Key West”, although it is man-made. The US Navy filled in that island to make more living area. The total land area of the city is 5.6 square miles (14.5 km2). Key West is officially the southern part of the United States. A Marker, the Southernmost Point is a famous landmark where people line up for hours just to set foot in the official southernmost part of the USA. 

 

Key West is all the way at the end of the Florida Keys. 130 miles (210 km) southwest of Miami and 106 miles (171 km) north-northeast of Cuba. 

 

There are many ways to get to Key West. By driving, of course, which is one of the most famous drives (actually a bucket list for many). Many see Key West for the first time via cruise ship and fall in love with our little island paradise. The Key West International Airport provides direct flights.
